Ms. McCarthy advises clients concerning the federal and state tax, employee benefit, and health care regulatory implications of business decisions. She provides technical tax, ERISA/employee benefits, and health care regulatory assistance in business planning. She also assists in business succession planning; and drafts and evaluates employee benefit plans, including health insurance; non-qualified deferred compensation, and executive compensation plans. Additionally, Ms. McCarthy provides professional auditing services, assisting clients in determining whether existing programs and policies comply with applicable tax law, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, MSP, and other related laws.
She represents clients before state tax boards and the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, and Division of Taxation, as well as before state and federal agencies and assists tax exempt organizations in obtaining tax exempt status, advises them on operational issues, and intercedes with the IRS on their behalf. Ms. McCarthy also provides advice and counsel to individuals with regard to tax and employee benefits matters including compensation and estate planning.
She is a member of the American, Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bar Associations and admitted to practice law in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, before the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts and the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. McCarthy obtained her LL.M. from Boston University School of Law, her J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston College Law School, and her A.B., magna cum laude, from Brown University. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Friend & Service and a member of Chamber Coalition Government Affairs Committee. Ms. McCarthy was named by Providence Business News as a 2005 40 Under Forty award recipient.
