Mr. Gandrup has over 20 years experience in civil litigation and arbitration, and concentrates his practice on admiralty and maritime law. 

 

Mr. Gandrup represents a wide variety of maritime interests in litigation and arbitration, as well as oil, technology and insurance companies in commercial litigation.  He has particular experience in the defense of major malpractice claims against marine classification societies.  Mr. Gandrup has also counseled clients concerning compliance with federal statutes and regulations relating to shipping, and with federal and state marine environmental law.

REPRESENTATIVE CASES 

  • Represented petitioner Exxon Corp. in Exxon Corp. v. Central Gulf Lines, Inc., 500 U.S. 603 (1991), in which the United States Supreme Court overruled its own long-standing precedent and expanded federal admiralty jurisdiction.
  • Defended major malpractice claims against marine classification societies, including the American Bureau of Shipping in the $1 billion suit brought by the Kingdom of Spain in connection with the oil spill from the M/T PRESTIGE, and Bureau Veritas, in a suit by cargo interests in connection with the sinking of the M/V STAR OF ALEXANDRIA. 
  • Represented an English marine insurer in coverage litigation relating to the capsize of a fishing vessel off Massachusetts.
  • Defended a U.S. technology company in multimillion dollar products liability litigation involving hundreds of fiber optic lasers.
  • Represented a major Boston Harbor property owner in wreck removal litigation.
  • Defended a charterer of two bulk carriers against multimillion dollar claims by its sub-charterer in a San Francisco maritime arbitration.
  • Defended a tanker owner against a claim in arbitration by its charterer, and prevailed on the owner’s counterclaim for vessel damage.
